February 1899 New Barrett School opened

February 1899 a new School House (The Barrett School house renamed Sawtelle Public School in Fall 1899) was opened and replaced the small 10 x 12 feet temporary School that was open for only 5 months. This new school was built on land purchased at a cost of $600. The building was rebuilt at different times as expansion was required. The Large words PUBLIC SCHOOL were visible from the Front of the School. The new School was located where the present Library is located between Corinth and Purdue avenue on Santa Monica blvd.  See this Link for more photos of the School House. This Sawtelle Public School wooden structure burned down in 1912 and in 1914 the Elementary school was relocated on Sawtelle blvd between Nebraska and Iowa avenues and named the Fourth Street School (Sawtelle Boulevard school) and in 1941 renamed the Nora Sterry Elementary School. The other school, also built as a Brick structure built in 1912 was the Sixteeneth Street School. Students attended that were located on the northern area of Sawtelle and the old Westgate (Brentwood) area. In 1912, the southern part of Sawtelle was Sparsely Populated and most of the population was on the Northern side of old Sawtelle. The Graduates of the Fourth street school attended the Sixteenth Street School grade levels 7 and 8 as Junior High Students. The Junior High Graduates would then attend Santa Monica High School if they desired to pursue their Education. See this Link on the Sixteenth Street School.
