1935 – Sawtellans seek Independence

In the Headline of the Independent Newspaper we see the confusion of the term “West Los Angeles District” and West L.A. (old Sawtelle). Old Sawtelle was seeking to withdraw from the city of Los Angeles not the surrounding communities of the “West Los Angeles District”, namely Brentwood and Westwood. It was old Sawtelle that was annexed to L.A. in 1922. Brentwood and the Westwood area known as “Westgate” were annexed to the City of Los Angeles on June 14, 1916. Source: West L.A.
